Recapping Learn at Launch: Beyond the Product

Beyond the Product: How Smart Leaders Innovate Their Entire Business to Stay Ahead of Disruption

We recently hosted a powerful Learn at Launch workshop featuring Pete van Overwalle, Founder & CEO of Omni Touchpoint. As a self-described “community builder” and innovation geek, Pete led us through a hands-on exploration of how to rethink value creation beyond the traditional “product” box. [02:22]

If you missed the session or want to revisit the frameworks discussed, here are the key takeaways from Pete’s deep dive into the types of innovation.

1. Falling in Love with the Problem

One of the most resonant themes of the morning was the shift from focusing on solutions to mastering the problem. As Pete noted, the “coolest thing in the room” isn’t your latest idea—it’s the problem you are trying to solve and how deeply you understand it. [20:41] Innovation happens when you have real empathy for the pain points your customers face. [20:53]

2. The 10 Types of Innovation Framework

Innovation isn’t just about inventing something brand new; it’s about creating a viable new offering within a system. Pete introduced us to a discipline that categorizes innovation into three main areas: [24:25]

  • Configuration: The innermost workings of your business (Profit Model, Network, Structure, Process).
  • Offering: Distinguishing features and functionality (Product Performance, Product System).
  • Experience: How you support and amplify the value for your customers (Service, Channel, Brand, Customer Engagement).

3. Case Studies in Success

To bring these concepts to life, we looked at how iconic brands have utilized these “levers” to dominate their industries:

  • Dyson: Spent 15 years and 5,127 prototypes to perfect Product Performance. [30:31]
  • Southwest Airlines: Revolutionized Process and Structure by using a single aircraft type (Boeing 737) to ensure fast turnaround times and higher profitability. [34:53]
  • Hyundai: Used a bold Service innovation by offering to take back leased cars if customers lost their jobs, addressing a specific market anxiety. [36:14]

4. Innovation as a “Team Sport”

The workshop concluded with participants identifying their own “unique advantages” and “disadvantages” compared to their competitors. We heard from local innovators in tech and consulting, all of whom are finding ways to “dust off” existing strengths and repurpose them to solve modern challenges. [51:51]
