Coffee, Tea, and the Work Day

Coffee, Tea, and the Work Day

Many people like myself have trouble remembering people’s names, dates, and what I had for lunch yesterday. Recent studies by Yassa and colleagues at John Hopkins University suggest that coffee or tea caffeine is not only a good early morning pick-me-up, but it’s a good memory booster as well.

The 160 participants were asked to study a series of photos before ingesting their pill. The study showed that there was a significant drop in the memory of the participants who received the placebo pill instead of the 200mg caffeine pill (about the same as a strong cup of coffee). They also did the tests with 100mg and 300mg doses. They found that the 300mg dose had no noticeable increase from the 200mg dose, but that 100mg dose was insufficient to the increase of memory retention.

Some people tend to prefer green tea for its “health benefits.” What many don’t know is that coffee and green tea both have many of the same health benefits. According to the Huffington Post, they both can reduce some forms of cancer, prevent diabetes, can help to reduce stress and help you look younger. With all these similarities, there has to be one that is overall better for you, right? Coffee has more amino acids per cup than green tea, but drinking more than two cups of coffee per day is not recommended. Therefore, the ability to drink numerous cups of green tea throughout the day makes green tea the WINNER!

So, for those of you looking for the extra kick in the morning while still fighting cancer, reducing stress, and looking younger, coffee or tea will suffice. Many in the business world do both: kick start the morning with coffee then coast on tea for the duration of the day.

It’s a good thing that our coffee shop sells both! 🙂
